CableCensus

CableCensus is a desktop app (Windows/macOS) that automatically inventories connected peripherals and produces an audit trail: what was plugged in, on which machine, by which user, and for how long. It focuses on the messy reality of offices and labs—shared dongles, unknown USB hubs, “mystery” keyboards, and random storage devices—by turning device connection events into a searchable, exportable log. The MVP would support policy-based alerts (e.g., block or warn on new storage-class devices), basic device fingerprinting (VID/PID/serial where available), and simple compliance reports for IT. This is not a magic security product; it won’t stop a determined attacker with custom hardware. It’s a practical visibility and accountability tool that reduces time wasted on troubleshooting, asset tracking, and post-incident “what happened?” questions.
