CephLog
CephLog is a mobile + web app for divers, snorkelers, aquarium staff, and citizen scientists to log octopus, squid, and cuttlefish encounters with structured fields that researchers can actually use. Users capture photos/video, auto-extract location/time/depth, and answer a short guided checklist (species guess, behavior, habitat, den type, mating/feeding signals). An AI model suggests likely species and flags low-confidence IDs for expert review. The app then publishes clean, exportable datasets and map layers for partner labs, NGOs, and marine parks, with privacy controls to prevent poaching (e.g., location fuzzing for sensitive species). Brutal reality: consumer “cool animal” apps don’t retain users; this survives by being a data pipeline for institutions that already pay for monitoring and reporting, while still being fun enough for divers to contribute.
