CraterCheck

CraterCheck is a web app (with optional mobile companion) that helps educators, journalists, and space enthusiasts quickly validate “planet facts” and viral images using authoritative planetary datasets. Paste a claim (e.g., “this is a new crater on Mars”) or upload an image, and the app guides you to the nearest matching location using public mission basemaps and metadata. It then generates a short, sourced report with links to the original archives (NASA PDS, USGS Astrogeology, ESA) and a confidence rating. This is a combination traditional + AI app: AI helps interpret the claim, suggest likely bodies/regions, and summarize sources; traditional GIS does the actual geospatial matching. It’s not a magic truth machine—many claims won’t be verifiable—but it will drastically cut the time it takes to do responsible checking.
