DarkSkySites

DarkSkySites is a mobile + web app that helps people locate genuinely dark, safe, and accessible stargazing spots (physical places) near them or along a road trip. It combines satellite light-pollution layers with terrain horizon profiles to show how much sky you’ll actually see from a specific parking lot, overlook, or campsite. Users can filter by moon phase, cloud cover, elevation, opening hours, and safety signals (cell coverage, nearby roads, reported issues). The app focuses on reality: many “good” spots are blocked by trees, mountains, gates, or local rules. Community submissions are allowed but heavily verified with photo proof, GPS traces, and reputation scoring to reduce junk data. Monetization: freemium with a paid tier for advanced forecasts, offline maps, and trip planning. This is a combination traditional + AI app (AI for verification, ranking, and photo-based horizon/obstruction detection).
