DialectMapr
DialectMapr is a web app (with optional mobile recorder) for linguistics students and researchers to collect short speech samples, automatically transcribe them, and visualize dialect features geographically over time. Users create a study, recruit participants via shareable links, and capture consent plus basic demographics. The system extracts measurable variables (e.g., vowel formants, rhoticity, lexical variants, syntactic patterns) and plots them on interactive maps with confidence intervals and audio snippets. It’s designed for small-to-mid projects that can’t afford expensive lab tooling: classroom dialect surveys, community language documentation, or pilot studies for grants. The app exports clean datasets (CSV/JSON), anonymizes audio by default, and provides reproducible “analysis cards” so results can be cited. It’s an AI+traditional app: AI for transcription/feature extraction, traditional for study workflow, data governance, and visualization.
