HeritageCaption
HeritageCaption is a mobile + web app that helps communities turn everyday speech into searchable, subtitled video clips in endangered languages. Users record short videos (stories, recipes, place-names, songs), then the app generates time-aligned captions and a draft translation. Crucially, it routes each clip to vetted community reviewers (elders, teachers, language committee members) who approve or correct captions, translations, and speaker consent metadata before anything is shareable. The output is exportable subtitles (SRT/VTT), a lightweight public or private “channel,” and a searchable archive by topic, speaker, and location. This is not a magic “save the language” button: accuracy will be imperfect, and adoption depends on trust and governance. The realistic value is reducing the labor of captioning and making community-approved media usable for classes, social media, and local archives.
