HoldScout

HoldScout is a mobile + web app that helps readers decide what to place on hold by predicting realistic wait times and pickup windows across their local library systems. Instead of the usual “X people ahead of you” guesswork, it estimates when a title will actually become available based on historical circulation patterns, copy counts, loan periods, renewal behavior, and branch transfer times. Users can compare editions (ebook, audiobook, large print, different ISBNs), set “need-by” dates, and get alerts for the best moment to place a hold so the book arrives when they can actually pick it up. It also suggests alternative titles that are available now (or sooner) without feeling like generic recommendations. Brutal truth: you will not win by trying to replace the library catalog or build another reading tracker. Libraries already have entrenched ILS/OPAC vendors and mediocre UX that users tolerate. Your wedge is being a lightweight decision tool that sits on top of existing systems and saves people time and disappointment. Start with a few library systems where data access is feasible (public APIs, SIP2, or partner exports), prove accuracy, then expand.
