HybridScore is a mobile + web app that compares hybrids and PHEVs using real-world operating costs instead of idealized MPG/MPGe claims. Users enter their typical driving mix (city/highway), climate, electricity rate, gas price, commute distance, and whether they can reliably charge. The app then estimates monthly fuel + electricity spend, effective MPG, and payback time versus a comparable gas model. It also highlights “charging dependency” risk: how much the PHEV’s savings collapse when you miss charging days. The data model combines public EPA specs with crowdsourced owner logs and price feeds; it’s not perfect, but it’s more honest than marketing. It’s built to help shoppers avoid buying the wrong hybrid type for their lifestyle, and to give current owners a reality check on whether they’re actually saving money.
