KosherScan

KosherScan is a mobile app that helps observant Jews quickly verify kosher status of packaged foods and ingredients by scanning barcodes and searching additives. It combines a traditional database-driven app with light AI to interpret ingredient lists, flag questionable E-numbers, and explain why an item may be problematic (e.g., gelatin sources, wine derivatives, shared equipment). Users can set their kashrut profile (OU/OK/Star-K accepted, Chalav Yisrael, Pas Yisrael, kitniyot, glatt, etc.) and get a simple “OK / Caution / Avoid” result with sources. The hard truth: this only works if the data is accurate and kept current, so the product must focus on a tight set of regions and reliable certification data partnerships rather than pretending to cover the whole world on day one. Monetization is subscription for advanced filters, offline mode, and family sharing.
