OutageBuddy
OutageBuddy is a mobile + web app that helps people in energy poverty navigate immediate power loss and chronic shutoff risk. Users can quickly report “no power/heat,” see verified nearby resources (warming/cooling centers, charging hubs, mutual-aid fridges, community orgs), and request a short-term “power plan” checklist tailored to their situation (medical devices, kids, seniors, housing type). The app also lets local nonprofits and municipalities publish real-time updates: center capacity, hours, eligibility, and transport options. Unlike generic 211 directories, OutageBuddy focuses on energy-specific needs and time sensitivity, with offline-first access and SMS fallback for low-data users. It’s realistic: it won’t magically lower bills, but it can reduce harm during outages and prevent dangerous delays by routing people to the closest viable help and the right documentation steps.
