PlanktoScope

PlanktoScope is a mobile + web AI app that helps labs and field teams quantify plankton from short microscope videos or image stacks. Users upload a clip, the app stabilizes frames, segments organisms, and suggests taxa labels with confidence scores, then outputs standardized counts (cells/L), size distributions, and exportable reports (CSV + Darwin Core-ish fields). It’s realistic because it doesn’t promise perfect taxonomy: it focuses on repeatable counting, QA flags, and human-in-the-loop review. The MVP targets a narrow set of common groups (diatoms, dinoflagellates, copepods, microplastics-as-debris class) and supports model retraining with a lab’s own labeled data. This reduces manual counting time, improves consistency across technicians, and creates an auditable trail for monitoring programs. Hardware-agnostic: works with phone-through-eyepiece videos and basic lab microscopes, not just expensive imaging systems.
