SacredMark
SacredMark is a mobile + web AI-assisted reference tool that helps users identify, contextualize, and avoid misusing religious symbols in art, jewelry, tattoos, classroom materials, and social posts. Instead of trying to be a universal “scan anything” app (which is unreliable), it focuses on a curated, citation-backed library of common and commonly-confused symbols across major traditions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Indigenous and folk practices where appropriate). Users can upload an image or select from a visual similarity search to get: tradition(s), region/time period, common meanings, known misuses, and “sensitivity notes” (e.g., sacred-only contexts, prohibited depictions). Each entry includes sources, museum/archive links, and a plain-language summary. The app also offers a “safe caption” generator for educators and creators, with disclaimers and citations. The goal is reducing accidental offense and misinformation, not replacing scholars.
