SalamScan

SalamScan is a mobile app (with a lightweight web dashboard) for herpers, students, and land managers who need reliable salamander/newt observations without turning every outing into a spreadsheet nightmare. It combines guided field logging (location, microhabitat, weather, cover object type, life stage, photos) with optional AI-assisted photo triage that suggests likely species and flags “low confidence” IDs for review. The app works offline in remote forests, then syncs later. Users can export clean datasets (CSV/GeoJSON) for classes, reports, or citizen-science submissions, and can keep sensitive locations private by default (with configurable fuzzing). This is not a “social feed” app; it’s a practical data tool that reduces misidentifications and messy notes while producing shareable, standardized records. Realistically, it wins only if it’s faster than pen-and-paper and more trustworthy than generic iNaturalist-style posting.
