VMGuardrail
VMGuardrail is a web app (with a lightweight agent) that continuously detects and prevents virtualization sprawl across VMware vSphere and Proxmox. It inventories VMs, flags idle or zombie machines, identifies oversized CPU/RAM allocations, and highlights orphaned disks and snapshots that quietly inflate storage costs. It also enforces simple guardrails: mandatory owner tags, expiration dates for non-production VMs, and approval workflows for high-cost templates. The MVP focuses on visibility and actionable cleanup: one-click reports for “top waste” candidates, Slack/Teams alerts, and exportable recommendations for change windows. This is not a magic “auto-optimize everything” product—admins still control changes—but it makes waste obvious and ties it to dollars. It’s designed for small-to-mid IT teams that don’t have FinOps maturity but are getting hammered by infrastructure costs.
